MFC 23: Where former UFC fighters go to be shamed

Mark Pavelich is trying to establish a big time promotion in western Canada but too often it falls flat like last night’s Maximum Fighting Championship 23 at River Cree Casino. Pavelich’s plan of using UFC castoffs is exploding in his face.

During a prefight video blog, Pavelich claimed Dean Lister versus Thales Leites would be one the greatest grappling matches in the hstory of mixed martial arts. It was awful and exactly what we saw from Lister when he was with the UFC. Throughout the fight Lister, who once again looked light in the gas tank, shot for sloppy takedowns, pulled guard and butt scooted. He almost got booed out of the MGM back at UFC 92 for the same nonsense against Yushin Okami. Leites simply fell forward landing top control, got in a few punches and avoided submission. It may have been the worst televised main event of 2009 in front of what looked like 500 people…
